In 1893, a teenager named Julian "Pappy" Van Winkle Sr. began selling whiskey from the back of a horse and buggy across Kentucky. He was nineteen years old, working for a liquor wholesaler, and already carrying something more valuable than the bottles in his cart — an unshakeable conviction that bourbon, if made with absolute integrity, could be something truly extraordinary. He did not know, then, that this conviction would outlive him by more than a century. He just kept selling, kept believing, and kept refusing to compromise.

When Pappy opened Stitzel-Weller on Derby Day 1935, he made a decision that every serious bourbon drinker is still tasting today. Instead of following the industry standard of rye-heavy grain recipes, he replaced the rye with wheat — a quieter, softer grain that steps back and lets the oak, the caramel and the natural sweetness of the bourbon speak without interruption. That wheated mash bill, refined and guarded across four generations of Van Winkles, is the foundation of everything. It is why Pappy tastes the way it does — and why nothing else tastes quite like it.

The other ingredient is time — and at Van Winkle, time is given without limit and without negotiation. Barrels are selected from the heart of the warehouse, where the interaction between Kentucky's dramatic seasons and the charred oak is at its most expressive. They stay there — untouched, unhurried — for a minimum of ten years, and up to twenty-three. The result is not just aged bourbon.
