Maraska Pelinkovac Liqueur
Maraska Pelinkovac is a Croatian herbal liqueur with a recipe rooted in the 19th century, built around wormwood and a closely guarded blend of botanicals. Bottled at a classic European liqueur strength, it pours a deep mahogany color and opens with an aromatic rush of bitter herbs, pine, and menthol. It sits in the same family of herbal-bitter traditions as Jagermeister or Amaro, but with a distinctly Balkan accent.
On the palate, Pelinkovac delivers that signature wormwood bitterness balanced by earthy roots, citrus peel, and a touch of sweetness that keeps it drinkable. It is traditionally served very cold, straight from the freezer, in a chilled shot glass, often with a slice of orange. It also mixes well with tonic, cola, or lemonade, and stirs into amaro-forward cocktails where a more herbal edge is welcome. Post-meal, it doubles as a digestif.
The Maraska distillery in Zadar has been producing Dalmatian liqueurs and fruit brandies since 1768, best known internationally for its Maraschino cherry liqueur. Pelinkovac is one of its cornerstone domestic bottlings and remains a cultural staple across Croatia, Slovenia, and the wider former-Yugoslavian region.
