Louis Latour Puligny Montrachet La Garenne Premier Cru 2023
A Premier Cru white Burgundy from one of Puligny-Montrachet's highest vineyards: rich, buttery and spiced, with a crisp line of acidity. 93 points, Wine Spectator.
La Garenne sits high on the Puligny-Montrachet slope on limestone and scree, and Maison Louis Latour, family-owned since 1797, makes this Premier Cru from 100% Chardonnay off vines averaging 35 years, hand picked at about 40 hectoliters per hectare. It is fermented in oak with full malolactic and aged eight to ten months in barrels from the Latour cooperage, half of them new. In 2023 a dry spring led into an August heat wave tempered by mid-month rain, and a second heat wave in September made the timing of the pick crucial for freshness. Bruce Sanderson of Wine Spectator (93 points) calls it "a sleek, tense white" with apple, lemon, stone and baking spice, adding that it "kicks into high gear at the end," and rates it best from 2027 through 2035. Only 100 cases were made, 40 of them imported to the US. 13.5% ABV, 750ml.
