World Whiskey Society's Reserve Collection continues with Edition No. 06, a single barrel straight rye whiskey finished in ex-Awamori casks — the first rye whiskey finished in barrels that previously held Awamori, the traditional long-grain-rice spirit of Okinawa. The whiskey begins as a 95% rye, 5% malted barley mash bill distilled in Indiana before resting for 12 years, then non-chill filtered and bottled without added color by World Whiskey Society Co. in Pendergrass, Georgia. It arrives in a gothic, sculpted decanter topped with a pewter gargoyle stopper, part of a limited label run.

The Awamori finish leaves its mark from the first pour, with an amber whiskey that opens on pear, peach, cigar box, and green peppercorn alongside fresh leather and light grain sweetness. On the palate, white pineapple and pear meet cinnamon and black pepper rye spice, rounding into caramelized sugar, honey, toasted oak, and tobacco leaf. The finish carries the Awamori influence furthest, turning tropical with coconut and ripe mango before rye spice, a savory umami note, and dry charred oak close things out.
