Stranahan's Sherry Cask Colorado Whiskey is an American single malt from Denver, made from 100% malted barley and Rocky Mountain water, matured in new charred American oak and then finished in Oloroso sherry casks from Andalucía, Spain. Stranahan's is one of the pioneers of American single malt, and the Sherry Cask is the expression that shows how well the distillery's fruity, malty spirit takes to sherry wood.

The nose is raisin, fig and dark chocolate over the house notes of toffee and barley sugar. On the palate it is rich and rounded: dried cherry, orange peel, baking spice and a nutty Oloroso depth, with a long finish of cocoa and gentle oak. Drink it neat or with a single cube; it also makes an excellent Boulevardier.

If you enjoy sherried Speyside malts such as GlenDronach or Aberlour, or Highland Park, the Sherry Cask is the easiest way into the American single malt category.

Why Gifted Pour recommends it

This is a thoughtful pick for the whiskey lover who already knows their sherried malts and would enjoy a fresh, American take on the style. Made in Denver from 100% malted barley and Rocky Mountain water, it matures in new charred American oak before a finish in Oloroso sherry casks from Andalucía, Spain, and you can taste both halves of that story. Raisin, fig and dark chocolate sit over toffee and barley sugar on the nose, while the palate turns rich and rounded with dried cherry, orange peel, baking spice and a nutty Oloroso depth, closing on cocoa and gentle oak. It suits a milestone birthday, a promotion, Father's Day or a thank-you for the host who keeps a good bar cart. Stranahan's is one of the pioneers of American single malt, which gives the bottle a story worth telling as it is opened. The recipient can sip it neat from a tulip glass, add a few drops of water, pour it over a large cube, or stir it into a rich Boulevardier.

Pairs well with

  • Dark chocolate truffles — The whiskey's dark chocolate nose and long cocoa finish echo the richness of good chocolate.
  • Aged cheese with dried figs — Nutty Oloroso depth and notes of fig and raisin make a natural match for a cheese board with dried fruit.
  • Father's Day gift — Its warm toffee, baking spice and dried cherry character makes for an easy, generous after-dinner pour to share with Dad.
