Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select Stags Leap District 2017
Shafer Hillside Select 2017, with several years of bottle age. 94 points, Wine Spectator.
Hillside Select is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Shafer's steep, rocky estate blocks in the Stags Leap District, including Sunspot, John's Upper 7, Venado Ilegal and Firebreak, aged 32 months in new Allier and Tronçais French oak. The 2017 is the wine's 35th vintage. A long, warm summer let the fruit hang in near-ideal conditions, an intense early-September heatwave stressed the vines, and cooler weather later in the month let ripening finish gracefully. Lisa Perrotti-Brown of Wine Advocate (98+ points) praised its "gorgeous ripe, velvety tannins and fantastic freshness" and called it "an absolute triumph," with a drinking window of 2022 to 2047. Antonio Galloni of Vinous (97 points) calls it "an insanely beautiful wine" and suggests drinking it from 2025 to 2042, which puts it right at the start of its prime. 15.5% ABV, 750ml.
