Santa Teresa 1796 Solera Rum
Santa Teresa 1796 Solera Rum comes from Hacienda Santa Teresa in Venezuela's Aragua Valley, an estate founded in 1796 and still run by the same family more than two centuries later. The rum is built from a blend of aged rums that is then finished in a solera: a stacked system of American oak barrels where older rum is drawn off and topped up with younger rum, the way sherry and brandy de Jerez are made. The result is a consistent, mature blend with the depth of much older spirit.
In the glass it is a deep copper-amber. The nose brings toffee, dried fruit, vanilla and a little leather; the palate is dry rather than sweet, with cocoa, roasted nuts, orange peel and gentle oak spice, bottled at 80 proof. The finish is long and clean.
Sip it neat or over a single large cube, or use it where a rum should taste like rum: an Old Fashioned, a Mai Tai float or a Rum Manhattan. It is one of the best-value aged rums on the shelf.
