The legacy of Nelson Brothers Bourbon traces back to Charles Nelson's pursuit of the American dream and his quest for a fresh start in Nashville. Charles initially opened a grocery store, with his best-selling products being coffee, meat, and whiskey. As the demand for his whiskey continued to outstrip supply, he took a pivotal step. Charles acquired the distillery responsible for producing his whiskey in Greenbrier, Tennessee, and secured a patent for improved distillation techniques.

Through this journey, Charles Nelson not only played a pivotal role in popularizing Tennessee whiskey but also became a household name. One of his most celebrated creations, Belle Meade Bourbon, was one of around 30 different labels he produced in the late 1800s. Unlike most of his other products, Belle Meade Bourbon was produced in collaboration with Nashville's Sperry Wade & Company, a third party that engaged Nelson's Green Brier Distillery to market bourbon, rye, corn, and Tennessee whiskies under the Belle Meade brand.

Belle Meade Bourbon swiftly gained acclaim upon its market debut in 1878, renowned for its exceptional quality and value. Even long after the end of Prohibition, the legacy endured, and it was the dedication of Charlie and Andy Nelson, recent college graduates, that revitalized the family business and resurrected the once-prominent Nelson's Green Brier Distillery. Their unyielding determination overcame countless obstacles, including investor skepticism, and breathed new life into the family business.
