Dom Perignon Champagne Brut Rosé Vintage 2003
Dom Pérignon Rosé Vintage 2003, from the frost and heatwave year that brought Champagne its earliest harvest since 1822.
Dom Pérignon Rosé is made only in declared vintages from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grown in grand cru and premier cru vineyards, with still red Pinot Noir added for color and depth; in 2003 that red wine made up about 20% of the blend. 2003 was a year of extremes: severe April frosts destroyed much of the Chardonnay crop, then a scorching summer heatwave forced the earliest harvest since 1822, with picking starting on August 21. Few houses declared the vintage, but Dom Pérignon did, and picking early proved the winning decision. Wine Spectator (96 points) calls it "finely detailed in texture," with strawberry pâte de fruit, biscotti, anise and ginger over vivid acidity and a "long, echoing finish." The Wine Advocate's David Schildknecht (94 points) praises its richness and robustness, which never comes off as heavy. Wine Spectator rates it to drink now through 2029. 12.5% ABV, 750ml.
