Recognition & Prestige

The Original. The Award-Winning. The One That Changed Everything.

Four decades of recognition — because Blanton's has been setting the standard since before single barrel was even a category

Blanton's did not enter an existing competition for premium bourbon in 1984. It created the category — and then proceeded to define it for four consecutive decades. What began as one Master Distiller's tribute to a Kentucky gentleman became the most imitated, most celebrated single barrel expression in American whiskey history. Every award Blanton's has earned since is simply the world confirming what Elmer T. Lee already knew: when you bottle one perfect barrel at a time, there is nowhere for mediocrity to hide.

The results speak with a consistency that is almost without precedent. At the 2024 San Francisco World Spirits Competition — the most rigorous blind-tasting spirits event on earth, where Double Gold requires a unanimous verdict of excellence from every judge on the panel — Blanton's did not win once. It won three times, with Blanton's Original, Blanton's Gold and Blanton's Straight from the Barrel each receiving Double Gold medals in the same year. In 2025, Blanton's Gold and Blanton's Single Barrel both returned to claim further Gold recognition. The competition changes its entrants every year. Blanton's keeps winning.

Origin & History

Est. 1984 · Frankfort, Kentucky

The Bourbon That Started a Revolution — One Barrel at a Time.

How a retirement project became the world's first premium single barrel bourbon — and changed an entire industry forever

In 1984, Master Distiller Elmer T. Lee was nearing retirement when he was given one final task: create a bourbon of exceptionally high quality. He reached back decades, to a memory from his earliest days at the distillery in the late 1940s. He remembered Colonel Albert B. Blanton — the man who ran the distillery for over thirty years — and how the Colonel would quietly slip into Warehouse H, handpick a single "honey barrel" from the centre cut, and bottle it personally for dignitaries, friends and family. No blending. No standardisation. Just one perfect barrel, bottled one at a time. Elmer T. Lee decided to honour that tradition — and in doing so, invented a category that did not yet exist.

When Blanton's Single Barrel launched in 1984, it was genuinely radical. It challenged everything the bourbon industry believed about itself — that consistency meant blending, that premium meant process, that one barrel could never be enough. Blanton's proved otherwise. Today, single barrel bourbon is one of the most celebrated categories in American whiskey. But there was, and always will be, only one original.

Craft & Philosophy

Warehouse H · Frankfort, Kentucky
One Warehouse. One Barrel. No Compromises.

The happy accident that became Blanton's most closely guarded secret

After Prohibition was repealed in 1933, Colonel Blanton needed warehouse space — fast. He ordered a metal warehouse built, chosen purely for speed of construction. What he discovered next changed everything. The thin metal walls made Warehouse H uniquely responsive to Kentucky's wild seasonal swings — heating faster in summer, cooling faster in winter — pushing the bourbon to interact with the charred oak at a more intense, more dynamic rate than any brick or wood warehouse could. The result was ageing unlike anything else at the distillery. Richer. Deeper. More complex. Colonel Blanton quietly began favouring it. When Elmer T. Lee went looking for the finest barrels the distillery had to offer in 1984, he found them exactly where Colonel Blanton always had — in the centre cut of Warehouse H.

Every bottle of Blanton's is still drawn from that same warehouse today. Still hand-bottled one barrel at a time. Each barrel yields a bourbon slightly different from the last — a different depth of oak, a different shade of amber, a different character shaped by exactly where in Warehouse H it spent its years. The barrel number, rick number, dump date and Master Distiller's signature appear on every bottle. Not as decoration. As proof that what you are holding came from one single barrel, and one barrel only.

A Gift Worth Giving

The stopper. The barrel number. The story.

Not Just a Bottle. A Collectible. A Conversation. A Legend.

The gift that arrives with a story already inside it — and a stopper nobody puts down

Blanton's arrives differently from every other bourbon on a gift table. The iconic horse and jockey stopper — one of eight, each a different stride in a race, each marked with a letter that spells B-L-A-N-T-O-N-S — turns every bottle into an object worth keeping long after it is empty. Collectors pursue the complete set with the same seriousness they bring to the bourbon itself. The barrel number, rick number and dump date on the label make every single bottle unique — a specific barrel, from a specific place in Warehouse H, on a specific day. No one else received exactly this bottle. That is not a marketing line. That is a fact.

For the bourbon lover who already knows Blanton's, it is the gift that confirms you truly understand what they value. For the person being introduced to it for the first time, it is an experience — the stopper, the label, the story, and then the bourbon itself — that they will not forget or stop talking about. Either way, it is the gift that does far more than arrive. It stays.
