Benchmark is Buffalo Trace's value bourbon, and the five expressions are the cheapest way to taste what proof, warehouse floor, batch size and single-barrel selection do to one mash bill: the everyday KSBW, the Full Proof, the Top Floor, the Small Batch and the Single Barrel.

A whole bourbon education for less than one allocated bottle.

Color: Light gold on the Old No. 8 and Small Batch, amber on Top Floor and Single Barrel, deep copper on the Full Proof.

Nose: Old No. 8: corn, vanilla and light oak. Small Batch: caramel and honey. Top Floor: toasted oak and brown sugar from the top of the rickhouse. Single Barrel: cherry and cinnamon. Full Proof: baked apple, butterscotch and charred oak.

Palate: All five come from the same Buffalo Trace low-rye mash bill, so you taste proof and barrel placement, not recipe. Old No. 8 is soft and simple, Small Batch rounder, Top Floor drier and oakier, Single Barrel fruitier, and the 125 proof Full Proof dense and sweet with real heat.

Finish: Short on Old No. 8, medium on Small Batch and Single Barrel, long and oaky on Top Floor, longest on Full Proof.
